Domestic violence: Why do they stay?

03.07.2019

A woman was killed by her (ex-)partner every three days in Germany in 2018. And many men also suffer martyrdom. But why do they stay in violent relationships for so long? A mystery or not? We talk to a family therapist and explore this question.

For many women, the home is a dangerous place. That's what the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Franziska Giffey, said, when she presented new figures on domestic violence in Germany last year. One in four women have experienced physical or sexual violence in a relationship at some point in their lives.

In today's podcast, we ask ourselves why so many partners stay with their partners even when they become violent. Among others, we talk to the family therapist Annette Lindner from Wegweiser e. V.which counsels victims of domestic violence.

We are often asked this question. Why doesn't she leave? Why has she put up with it for so long? There are many reasons. The fear of loneliness. Many of the people who go through this are used to violence from childhood. In many violent relationships, emotional as well as financial dependency plays a role. And what many women also say: there were also good times, we had lots of nice moments. I hear that in almost every counselling session. - Annette Lindner, Wegweiser e. V.
