What is the KNE?

Competence centre for nature conservation and energy transition

The coalition agreement between the CDU, CSU and SPD from 16 December 2013 states: "We want to shape the energy transition in a way that is compatible with nature and at the same time create the necessary procedures and suitable structures for this. For this reason, a centre of excellence for nature conservation and the energy transition will be established in order to help objectify the debates and avoid conflicts on the ground." This was in response to a request from environmental organisations, which had already suggested such an institution in 2012. The competence centre was opened on 1 July 2016 by the then Federal Minister for the Environment, Dr Barbara Hendricks.

What does the KNE do?

Knowledge transfer As an information centre, the KNE transfers new scientific findings on nature conservation to those involved in the energy transition.

Counselling As a counselling centre, the KNE provides information on conflict prevention, conflict resolution and successful process design, and arranges professional mediators on request.

Dialogue design As a dialogue centre, the KNE offers the stakeholders of the energy transition - in the sense of a joint position finding - a confidential exchange on specific issues.

Media relations The KNE supports the public discourse on the environmentally friendly energy transition through a wide range of press and media work.

Specifically, the KNE maintains a pool of specially trained mediators who are also experts in the field of energy transition and nature conservation.
