From the U.S. American <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transformativemediation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8222;Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation&#8220; (ISCT)<\/a> He is certified as a Transformative Mediator\u2122 and is the Institute's contact person for the application and dissemination of the method in German-speaking countries.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:20px;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single\" style=\"--awb-height:20px;--awb-amount:20px;--awb-sep-color:#ffffff;border-color:#ffffff;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><h2 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"24\" data-lineheight=\"36px\">Contents:<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"24\" data-lineheight=\"36px\"><span class=\"\">Transformative Mediation (TM):<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Basic assumptions, purposes, objectives, techniques and tools<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">Differentiation between transformative mediation and problem-solving orientated mediation (incl. Harvard negotiation concept according to Fischer\/Ury and non-violent communication according to Rosenberg)<\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.transformativemediation.org\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Textbooks<\/a>Promise of Mediation by Bush\/Folger (1994) and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"20\" data-lineheight=\"30px\">What makes TM special?<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">Do not set an agenda, but<span class=\"\">\u00a0Follow the dialogue between the parties<\/span>I.e. hold up the map with all the topics they draw during the conversation and make sure that only the parties decide what is discussed, when and how.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">The mediator's main focus is on <strong>Recognising and offering opportunities for empowerment<\/strong> (self-empowerment) and <strong>Recognition<\/strong> (Recognition) Shifts. Shifts are characterised by the increasing ability to make good decisions and give mutual recognition.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">The aim is to <strong>Improving the quality of communication<\/strong> (from destructive to constructive).<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Four effective intervention techniques:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Mirror<\/strong> (Complete reproduction of the statements)<\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><strong><span class=\"\">Check-in<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0means,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #4f4f4f;\">Make decisions about the content (e.g. how they said or meant something) as well as about the course of the conversation (what happens next?) visible and ensure that only the parties make these decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Summarise<\/strong> of the topics on which there is disagreement and agreement and reproduction of the respective party statements on the controversial topics.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Take out<\/strong>, <strong>Take back<\/strong> (Letting go, taking oneself out when the interaction takes on a constructive character and the parties begin to respond to information from the other party, to follow up, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"20\" data-lineheight=\"30px\"><span class=\"\">Basic assumption of transformative mediation:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\">We don't like ourselves in conflict, reject ourselves and the other person and do things that we don't actually like. Conflict destabilises us and impairs our ability to make good decisions and take the other person's perspective. But that is exactly what we want and can do. A non-directive attitude on the part of the mediator, combined with appropriate interventions, strengthens self-determination and dialogue and offers a suitable space for transforming conflicts.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"20\" data-lineheight=\"30px\"><span class=\"\">The limits of transformative mediation?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\">What are the limits for this type of mediation in practice?  The limits are basically determined by the parties themselves. The fact that the parties themselves determine the content and course of the sessions means that the outcome is highly self-determined. Mediations often end with a joint agreement, but it is precisely the increased level of understanding of the different points of view that is of great value.
